Folding@Home to fight COVID-19

The Linus Tech Tips Folding@Home team started an emergency response to the ongoing pandemic. I just joined their team.

Everyone can donate excess cpu and gpu time to F@H. The projects/work units for the Coronavirus Project are given high priority, so when more WUs become available, the client gets those automatically when it’s set to support research fighting any disease.

I installed the client on my storage server/plex server to run 24/7 on an Intel Core i3-3240 CPU @ 3.40 GHz. The system is powered on anyway and the additional load for this cpu should use relatively little energy (as it’s not that powerful), so at the moment I think this should be all right to run indefinitely.

Additionally I installed the client on my gaming machine, where it can use an Intel Core i7-9700K CPU , which runs at 4,68 GHz overclocked. Additionally the client can compute using the CUDA cores on my NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 (Slightly overclocked by Afterburner).
This setup should run until the end of the event, which is scheduled for 10. April 2020. This client at the moment works, except when I’m gaming, constantly.

The client runs with low priority, so regular use of the computer doesn’t get affected noticeably. It can also be configured to work only when the system is idle. Additionally there are three power levels available to adjust the load for the system.
